ASOindex benchmark: the most competitive categories of game apps
We’ve already touched on the topic of the ASOindex benchmark. The research was focused on apps, this time we’re speaking of games. We looked into the main game categories of the App Store and Google Play to learn how their average ASOindex differs and what percentage of games match it. This will help to understand how challenging different niches are.
About ASOindex and ASOindex benchmark
ASOindex is an assessment of the app optimization quality. It’s based on many factors, here are some of them:
- Number of characters in text elements;
- Number of screenshots;
- Average rating;
- Keywords popularity;
- Visibility Index (based on app’s positions by main keywords);
- Presence of video;
- Frequency of updates.
The average ASOindex benchmark is a metric that helps you understand how competitive the category is in terms of optimization. This is not the arithmetic average of all ASOindex ratings, but the ASOindex standard. For its calculation, only active apps are taken into account. Using the ASOindex benchmark, you can quickly and objectively assess the situation to understand whether you are lagging behind or ahead.
How many game apps match the average ASOindex benchmark?
We’ve selected the main game categories of the App Store and Google Play. The research focuses on free apps in the US locale. We studied apps with up to 200 positions in each store. This sample seems to us the most representative. It makes no sense to take into account absolutely all apps because many of them simply lie dead at the bottom of the store. Here’s what we’ve found. Below is the ASOindex benchmark of the categories and the percentage of apps that match it (it means their ASOindex isn’t lower).
|Category||Average ASOindex on App Store||Percentage of apps matching the average ASOindex|
|Games Role Playing||7.8||33%|
|Category||Average ASOindex on Google Play||Percentage of apps matching the average ASOindex|
|Games Role Playing||8.1||34%|
We’ve highlighted the most and least competitive niches from the point of ASO promotion. If you’re looking for the easy way out, keep these numbers in mind.
- The least competitive Google Play categories are Games Trivia and Games Music. On the App Store, these are the same categories, plus Games Racing and Games Words.
- In the App Store, the most challenging ASO category is Kids. On Google Play – Games Educational, Games Role Playing, and Games Strategy.
